oh look, a can of worms! i wonder what's inside...
Reading a couple of syndicated sets of technical blogs today, I came across this entry (second sub-heading, with the picture). As you can see from the comments to the post itself, there's plenty of opinions on it, and this being the Internet there's enough immaturity and downright stupidity to go around too. My question is: do you think that's offensive? Why / why not? Slightly more importantly, how would you go about telling the guy "Dude, that's not cool"[1]? (Some people's efforts have not been so successful).

Ah, the joy of the Free Software community. Compare this storm in a teacup to where one operating system's Benevolent Dictator for Life called the developers of another operating system a "bunch of masturbating monkeys", and they're apparently having a laugh about it.

[1] - For the record, that's my position. Over and above the thorny question of why it should not be posted on the Interwebs in the first place, it definitely should not be posted somewhere that's picked up by a news feed of blog posts about a Linux distribution!

'Oh, come on guys. If she didn't want her legs to be seen, she would have taken a long skirt.'

You know, I really thought that was going to lead up to snark/more obvious sarcasm. Apparently not! Oh the internets.

Seen, sure. Stared at, probably not. Surreptitiously photographed and then posted to the Internet, almost certainly not!

Pretty much.

People are weird sometimes.

I think more than any else I'm just bored of that sort of thing cluttering up the internet. The first time someone sees something like that they usually think "OMGWTFBBQ!!1! Thats rong!!1!eleven". But since this kind of thing has been circulating for years it's lost its impact and 99% of people will think it's not just uncool, but a waste of bandwidth. Surely he has something better to post.

So your approach would be to say: "Do you have no ideas of your own?"

Yeah, but also that the content is faintly embarrassing and there's no reason to post it. There's an argument to be made for posting something like "Every time you masturbate god kills a kitten" even though we've all seen it 1000 times already, but it's reasonable to think that it's witty and novel enough that someone else might enjoy it. Photos of legs aren't witty or novel and probably of little interest to anyone except the person that took them. I suppose if he had a blog entry that said "$old_recycled_concept_here" and it was something mundane like a LOLCAT nobody would give it a second glance, but some girl's legs? What's the point of that.

And I'm sure someone (*cough [info]mkgrnao cough*) would make the point that there are plenty of higher quality pictures of legs out there and the shoddy quality alone just adds insult to injury!

i think it's just a bit dull. OK legs... I got some too:) So? At least make an interesting/relevant point or come up with a good quote to match the legs in question...

Ooh, that's an interesting tactic: "Dude, that's way too boring to be cool!"

It might even work ;-)

I don't think you can. Just like the guy responding to the Uncle Bobby's Wedding discussion wont ever be made to see that marriage can take place between people who aren't a couple wherein one person is a man, and one is a woman. This guy will clearly continue having what I consider objectionable opinions about people's privacy and no-one will be able to convince him otherwise.

The only thing I can hope is that he'll come around to a more respectful way of thinking one day. Though I don't wish any harm on him, perhaps some similar embarrassment would help him see what he's doing - like I heard on The Maxx, "a liberal is a conservative who's never been mugged".
